Burberry Prorsum rightfully named their Spring/Summer 2014 collection « English Rose », as it was a very British delight indeed, where high tea spirit meets Swinging London.
The silhouette is soft and delicately feminine with a focus on pencil skirts, lace and fabulous flower-like embellishments, yet retains a sporty or more casual touch through the knitted jumpers and transparent PVC capes. More audacious pieces such as sheer shirts or see-through lace dresses and skirts give a wonderful edge to the collection, alongside the new bag Christopher Bailey introduced during the show, The Petal – a soft, feminine clutch in leather, rubber or canvas, and coming in many colours.
Trench coats and coats have always had a special place in every Burberry collection, and this one is no exception, with very stylish oversized and cardigan coats in matching spring colours.
The colour palette is exquisite, full of pretty pastels, like scrumptious macaroons on a multi-tiered dessert stand. Pale roses, mint greens, lavender, creamy lemon – all the tastiest flavours are represented, toned down further in the collection by more neutral colours such as earthy beige and greys. Raspberry and bolder colours appeared on a few garments, to match the men’s outfits.
In terms of prints, I particularly enjoyed the audacious combination of Lichtenstein-like red dots and graphic black and white horizontal stripes.
The show was as usual packed with celebrities, including Anna Wintour, Sienna Miller, Paloma Faith, Harry Styles, Suki Waterhouse, Olivia Palermo and so many others, and ended on a dazzling note, under a rain of rose petals.
