Ever since its introduction as a minimally invasive aesthetic procedure, Botox has been known to be a women’s go-to secret for correcting annoying expression lines on their faces. Now, there’s a new trend in town where men are now using “Brotox”, which is Botox for men, to cheat age and advance their looks in hopes of advancing within their careers as well as social circles.
As the number of men opting for Botox sky-rockets, men in UAE are also catching up on the trend. According to Dr Alexandre Dionyssopoulos, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery as well as a Professor in Cosmetic Surgery, men going for Botox is not a new thing, but surely the numbers are increasing.
“Of the top non-invasive cosmetic procedures, Botox takes the prize among men,” states Dr Alex, adding that 20 to 25 percent of his Botox clients are men. “Most of the men who come for Botox have always one thing in mind, which is to look a few years younger by drastically reducing the wrinkles on their faces.”
Looking at statistics from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), Botulinum Toxin, (including BOTOX, Dysport and Xeomin) was ranked the most popular procedure overall in 2013 alone with a total of 5,145,189 procedures amongst which 643,675 were men.
As for the reasons why men are now very willing to have Botox, it all comes down to their careers; at least for most of them. Says Dr Alexandre: “when you look at the workplace, older guys in their mid-30s and 40s are forced to compete with younger and fresher guys. And while some are confident about their jobs, for others it might not be so, and would like to have their lunch with a side of Botox to improve their looks.”
Professor Alexandre’s statement may not be far from the truth if a 2014 Harvard University study is to be believed. In part, the study states that “Good looks help you get ahead in business (if you’re a man) and that investors were more likely to put money into ventures if the man making the pitch is handsome.” This statement alone says all that needs to be said when it comes to men and looks where success is concerned.
The plastic surgeon notes that it is an easy sacrifice with a great outcome. “One needs only two sessions within one year, with each session taking 10 to 15 minutes and the usual minimal bruising,” he explains. In addition, he notes, Botox makes the face look relaxed and shaves off a few years hence making it an added ammunition to having a very successful career.
On the other hand, Brotox has been around for ages, so why is it becoming very popular now? According to Dr Prof Alexandre, the world is changing. “People are becoming more open minded towards aesthetic medicine, than they were a while back in the day,” says he adding that human vanity is the reason behind all this.
Although, according to Dr Alex, there is another crucial use for Botox in addition to removing a bit of wrinkles and making the face look fresh and relaxed, which can also help ones career. “When the male clientele come to get work done on their faces, they always have no clue that the same Botox can be used to treat hyperhidrosis, which is another word for excessive sweating. Many are surprised by this and some who suffer from the condition end up asking for additional injections to keep the sweat at bay, which always works,” says the doctor.
“All in all, doing a little work here and there to your looks in order to advance your career or gain a little bit of more self-confidence is a good thing. And to make it even better, only a man who has done Botox on their faces will recognise another Botox user. So if one is afraid that people will notice, it’s time to relax because if one notices, both of you might just end up bonding at the plastic surgeon’s office while getting your next shots of the toxin.”
