LG Toronto Fashion Week - Jour 4
Day 4 of LG Fashion Week featured Canadian designers Sid Neigum, Basch by Brandon, Heather Lawton, RUDSAK, Cydelic by Choryin, Lundström Collection, and VAWK. I was looking forward to two shows in particular – that of Montreal luxury leather outerwear and accessory designer RUDSAK and Choryin Choi’s debut collection, Cydelic by Choryin. It’s All Style To Me’s first show of the day was RUDSAK. More on RUDSAK including an interview with designer Evik Asatoorian in a separate post.
Having met Choryin at the Greta Constantine Fashion Show a week earlier, I had promised to check out his Day 4 show at LGFW’s Studio. Originally from Hong Kong, Choryin is a recent grad from Seneca’s Fashion Arts program. As a result of his hard work, he managed to win both a Textile Design Award and Fashion Arts Award. His monster-themed Cydelic by Choryin collection resonated with a Japanese street style meets Timothy Burton presence. Later, Choryin shot down my Corpse Bride interpretation, but did acknowledge that I hit the nail on the head with respect to the Japanese influences. “Yes, it is not Chinese like some people think. It is not Timothy Burton, but it is simply monster meets Tokyo,” he explained. His runway show was beyond capacity and proved a bit much for staff to handle. In what had to go down as one of the biggest PR cluster f**** of LGFW, the staff shut out Fashion Television et In Fashion. “I didn’t get to see the show,” said Glen Baxter when I questioned him about it later. “They wouldn’t let us in.” Choryin was livid and rightfully so. His first collection was one of the most original collections of LGFW, yet zero television footage. Yes, the suspended Easter Island headed skirts were a bit much for ready-to-wear, but his cream outwear with oversized buttons, Rorschach print dress, and Corpse Bride gown were incredible. Expecting more great things to come from Choryin.

VAWK has become one of the most talked about shows of LGFW FW11. If IZMA has the makings of Canada’s answer to FENDI, then VAWK may very well have the potential to become a Canadian Roberto Cavalli. Project Runway winner Sunny Fong filled Heritage Court’s main runway to capacity on Thursday night. The sexy cable little black strapless and one shoulder dresses paired with fingerless black leather Danier gloves, the lush leopard-print trench and matching skirt, the chevron coyote-trimmed outerwear – this is what men’s wet dreams are made of. Well, maybe just mine. One can only hope that Fong will get racier and that the necklines will plunge even lower for Spring/Summer 2012. Cougars and desperate housewives of Woodbridge await.
