Overfishing is\u202fone of the greatest threats\u202fto the health of\u202four oceans, as it causes biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, bycatch of marine species, human rights abuses, and more. But today, individuals and businesses finally have a reason to be optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout June and July, Ocean Wise\u2019s seafood program is running its Waves of Change<\/a><\/em> campaign to educate and empower individuals and businesses to take action to help end one of our planet’s greatest crises: overfishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AS\u00a0Sophika\u00a0Kostyniuk, Ocean Wise’s Director, Fisheries and Seafood<\/strong> explains \u201cNot only are ocean habitats, biodiversity and species populations at risk when overfishing occurs, the livelihoods and cultures of tens of millions of people around the globe are also negatively impacted. Every business and every consumer\u00a0has\u00a0the power to create positive change by educating themselves and making the right choices every day. Ocean Wise is here to guide you to be an important part of the solution. Together, we can help turn the tide on overfishing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June and July, Ocean Wise is asking members of the media and the general public to join us as we share educational resources about\u00a0the drivers\u00a0and solutions to overfishing. We will also be highlighting\u00a0the ways in which\u00a0Ocean Wise\u2019s\u00a0incredible\u00a0partners are leading the sustainable seafood movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocean Wise has been working closely with food service partners and businesses across Canada to identify and take key steps to help end overfishing. The result has been an inspiring set of actions that give real hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\u00a0Waves of Change\u00a0<\/em>campaign already has more then 40 business partners, including\u00a0Fresh Prep,\u00a0Save On Foods and White Spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regular updates are be posted on:\u00a0seafood.ocean.org\/waves-of-change.<\/a> There, you can also find\u00a0many resources, fundraisers, actions\u00a0and events\u00a0to get involved,\u00a0including\u00a0a\u00a0webinar on World Oceans Day,\u00a0June 8\u00a0at 12:00 PM PST \/ 3PM EST\u00a0titled\u00a0Navigating Solutions to Overfishing<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0focused on\u00a0actionable solutions that every person and business can take to make a positive contribution to ocean health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
